"This was my breakthrough quilt. I wanted to mix both patterns and textures, forbidden by orthodox patchwork rules. I used a sewing machine to join the pieces straight onto the wadding and backing, a method often called 'strip piecing'. This produced deep groves between the very different strips and an overall ploughed field effect."
